The principle pieces of this song were written and recorded in a day. It was intended to be a “b-side” type of track, to post on the internet and give away to friends but not to include on a record or play at shows. It is also the only song from the original demo to include guitar. The lyrics are about an argument, and the contradiction of being told that you don’t care when you’re visibly upset.
The song is probably too simple, musically and lyrically, but in that simplicity there is a honesty that I find compelling. I didn’t intend to take the song very seriously in the long run, I guess, and instead it became one of my favorite things I’ve ever written.
For fun, this song was re-imagined as a pseudo-waltz as a bonus track for the pre-order of All I Ever Wanted. -JJ

Taking steps to find
The correct words to
Not seem to unkind
Fragile as we are
Action we require
We cannot just sit
If I seek what’s higher
Would you share that path?
I am not too far
From what’s tied me down
Yet from “your” came “our”
Still I’m questioned, but…
If I wasn’t there, don’t you think I would go?
If I didn’t care, why would I feel so low?
I am falling, yet
It’s the path I choose
And without regret
I continue on
For my will is strong
And without regret
I will sing my song
I continue on
I am not too far
From what’s tied me down
Yet from “your” came “our”
Still I’m questioned, but…
If I wasn’t there, don’t you think I would go?
If I didn’t care, why would I feel so low? |
